Q: How common is violence to women?
A:
In 2005/6 there were 357,000 incidences of domestic violence in Britain.
Statistically, one in four women will experience domestic violence during their lifetime.
Q: How often does the victim know their attacker?
A:
On average over 150 people (120 women, 30 men) are killed each year by a current or former partner. .
Q: How many attackers are convicted for their crimes?
A:
For all incidences of domestic abuse reported to the police in 2004, only 21 per cent resulted in charges with 11 per cent leading to a conviction.
Q: How often are weapons used in attacks and what kind of weapons are used most?
A:
Weapons were used in 22 per cent of all violent crimes reported in the BCS in 2005/06. The most common types of weapons used were knives (7 per cent of all incidents), hitting implements (7 per cent), and glass or bottles (4 per cent).
